What a Bloomsday!!

Bloomsday 2011 was one of the most innovative, inclusive festivals celebrating Joyce and his works this year. For music lovers, there were several concerts showcasing works Joyce himself loved, two concerts, sponsored by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature took place in St. Stephens Green and played to a sell out audience. Of course there was the usual breakfast, this year in the beautiful Gresham Hotel. For the more active among you, there were customised walks and cycles. For those who wanted to retrace Leopold Blooms’ steps, a visit to Sweny’s, Lincoln Place is a must to buy some lemon soap and breath the same air as Leopold. Looking forward to 2012 which promises to bring an even more successful Bloomsday. As Joyce said himself “When I die Dublin will be written my heart”…

Bring your children to Wood Quay Venue, Dublin 8 on Saturday 16th July at 1:30pm,with authors, illustrators and some surprises along the way we will be sharing the magic that great children’s stories can inspire. Please feel free to bring along a blanket and a picnic hamper to join in with the spirit of this event – teddy bears are also very welcome to attend! The event is free, but booking is advised – get your tickets at The Gutter Bookshop, Cow’s Lane, Temple Bar. In association with Dublin UNESCO City of Literature and Childrens Books Ireland.

This year Bloom 2011, Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event will have a show garden designed for literary Dublin, there will be poets reading in the garden every day. At the weekend, Joycean works will be read from the garden, giving us a taste of whats to come at the following week’s Bloomsday Festival. Storytellers will engage and entertain children each day of the Festival.

On 11^th May in Dublin UNESCO City of Literature you are invited to discover exciting contemporary European writers in the intimate surrounds of the Sugar Club, Leeson Street. Enter the murky world of crime and murder as writers from Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy and Scotland read and discuss their works. An atmosphere of suspense and intrigue will be created by musicians from Dublin Institute of Technology. Over 2,000 people with a common interest – a love and admiration of Dublin writing gathered at Convention Centre Dublin on March 18th. DublinSwell celebrated the creativity and intellect of our city – a quality which has given us the UNESCO City of Literature mantle. Over twenty writers, poets, playwrights, actors and singer songwriters entertained and engaged. It was an evening filled with words, song and emotion, a trully once in a lifetime experience.
