Glasnevin Cemetery was established in 1832 under the direction of Daniel O’Connell for the purpose of burying “people of all religions and non”. The cemetery encompasses 124 acres and 1.5 million burials. Glasnevin has great national heritage through the social and historical history of the people buried there from all walks of life over 178 years. Several Dublin writers have been buried at Glasnevin including Brendan Behan, Christy Brown, Gerald Manley Hopkins, William Rooney, James Stephens, Sinéad de Valera, and Micheal Moran Zozimus. Mount Jerome Cemetery was established by Sir Robert Shaw of Bushy Park. Sir Robert set up the General Cemetery Company of Dublin by an Act of Parliament in 1834 during the 4th and 5th years of the reign of King William IV. The company bought the lands and house of Mount Jerome in Harold's Cross from the Earl of Meath, John Chambre, on the 23rd January 1836. Writers who have been buried here include William Carleton, George Fitzmaurice, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Máirtín Ó Cadhain, AE Russell, John Millington Synge. Deans Grange Cemetery was established in 1861 following the Burial Act of 1855 which resutlted in the closure of many Dublin cemeteries due to overcrowding. Writers buried here include Donagh MacDonagh, Francis MacManus, Brian O'Nolan (Flann O'Brien), Frank O'Connor and Pádraig O Siochfhradha.
St. Fintan's Cemetery, which is located in Sutton Co. Dublin, is the resting place of writers Padraic Colum and Mary Colum and song writer Phil Lynott.
Arbour Hill Military Cemetery is the is the final resting place of 14 of the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those interned there are writers Thomas MacDonagh, Pádraig Pearse (Páraic Mac Piarais), Joseph Mary Plunkett and Michael O'Hanrahan.
