Sandycove Martello Tower

One of a network of Martello towers built by the British along the coast of Dublin in the early 19th century to defend against the threat of a Napoleonic invasion, James Joyce briefly stayed in the Martello tower in Sandycove, which went on to become the setting of the opening to his masterpiece ‘Ulysses’, and eventually the location of the Joyce Tower Museum, which houses a collection of Joyce-related artifacts.
