Funny books are a serious business. Anyone who has tried to write one will confirm that a joke which looks effortless has generally put in a full day's work first.

On Thursday 17th September, Chapters welcomes bestselling novelist, screenwriter and director Caroline Grace-Cassidy and critically acclaimed comedian, author and broadcaster Colm O'Regan for Wit in Lit: a lively conversation about making readers laugh, what comedy allows writers to say and why witty books deserve more than the faintly suspicious respect they sometimes receive.

Guiding the conversation, and ensuring nobody gets away with describing comedy as 'light', are comedy writers and Irish Funny Women producers Val Troy and Orla Diamantino.

Expect readings, sharp conversation, audience questions, a book signing and a meet-and-greet. The conversation begins at 7pm and will run for approximately 60 minutes, followed by the signing and meet-and-greet. The evening will finish at 9pm.

Come for the jokes. Stay for the alarming discovery that timing, tone and one perfectly chosen word can require a lot of serious thought.
