Dublin City Libraries launch their Teen Citywide Reading Campaign

More About the Book

Dublin City Libraries, supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, are excited to launch their Teen Citywide Reading campaign for 2025.

This campaign encourages young people right across the city to read one book and aims to promote reading for pleasure among teenagers, while also building connections between them and their local library.

This year’s choice, James Butler’s ‘Crying Wolf’, is a gritty urban tale published by Little Island Books in 2024.

At the heart of the action is Joey, who is trying to leave his criminal activities behind and move on with his life. However, with his stepfather Vinny reappearing in his life, and both sides of the law looking for him, Joey gets drawn back into the life he so desperately wants to leave behind in this compulsive and fast-paced thriller.

The campaign launches today, Thursday 13th November, at 1.30pm in Ballyfermot Library where Transition Year students will meet with Councillor Vincent Jackson, representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin, and author James Butler.

The 2025 reading campaign runs from November to January and there will be author visits to many Dublin City Council branch libraries including Ballyfermot, Ballymun, Cabra, Central Library, Coolock, Dolphin’s Barn, Donaghmede, Drumcondra, Finglas, Kevin Street, Marino, Terenure and Walkinstown.

The campaign is run by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature and Dublin City Council Libraries, in partnership with Little Island Books, and is funded by Dublin City Council’s Library Service and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.

Copies of the book are available in all Dublin City Libraries as well as in all good bookshops. Dublin City Council Library stock can be borrowed from libraries nationwide.

It is a pleasure to be involved with an initiative that encourages teenagers to read and talk about books, and this year’s choice, Crying Wolf by James Butler, will keep readers enthralled. I hope that all involved will enjoy the book and the great experience of meeting and discussing the work with the author

I'm delighted that Dublin UNESCO City of Literature has chosen 'Crying Wolf' for this year's Teen Citywide Read campaign.  I hope that readers will enjoy following our young hero, Joey as he escapes the suburbs and his criminal past and heads into the city to begin a new life - an exploration that hopefully will help him find a newer, better version of himself, 'because a different Joey is all he wants to be
