A former Victorian-era pharmacy, Sweny’s featured as one of many locations in James Joyce’s 1922 novel Ulysses and has since been preserved as a key literary tourist attraction. Now run by volunteers, who often don a traditional chemist’s coat, Sweny’s continues to sell their famous lemon soap to those seeking to travel in the footsteps of Joyce’s Leopold Bloom, as well as hosting daily readings of Joyce’s works, including readings of Ulysses in Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German or Italian, depending on the day and time.
